What is the Internet?
The Internet is a collection of thousands of networks and millions of computers across the world, that all connect together to share information. It is often referred to as the "Information Superhighway".

What is the World Wide Web?
The World Wide Web, or WWW for short, is a specific subset of the Internet. It is the "front end" of the Internet and is the part that most people are exposed to first. The terms "Internet" and the "WWW" are commonly interchanged in error.

What is a Web Site?
A website is a collection of files linked together to create web pages that can be viewed on a browser. An active website is a colection of documents, images or various forms of animation that reside on a Web Server.

What is HTML?
  • HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language and is the underlying language for all web pages on the Internet.
  • HTML has 2 main defining functions:
    1. Provide a layout control for web documents.
    2. Provide a linking ability to other pages/sites (Hyperlinks).
  • The basic syntax and semantics of HTML are defined in the HTML Standard which is developed under the authority of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
  • HTML files are plain text files saved with a .htm or .html ending (the file extension),so they can be composed and edited on any type of computer (Windows, Mac, UNIX).
This "open platform" approach is premodinantly what has led the Internet to exploding to it's present size.

Structure of a HTML document
A HTML document consists mainly of html code (tags) and text, which define the structure and appearance of the document.
The basic structure consists of an outer <HTML> tag, which encapsulates a head and body.
Every HTML document has a head and body, defined by a <HEAD> and <BODY> tag (with matching closing tags).
The <HEAD> tag contains the TITLE and many other browser functions that are not displayed but may control how the rest of the document is formatted.
The <BODY> tag stores the actually content that is displayed on the page.
